DUMC 29 January 2017 Amazed by Jesus Reading: Mark 1:21-28 A. Introduction "There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a maiden. (Proverbs 30:18-19) The Big Idea: “Be amazed by Jesus as you Step Out in obedience!” B. Amazed By 1. Jesus’ ______________ “They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at His teaching, because He taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.” (Mark 1:21-22) i) Jesus taught as one who had authority. “They came to Him and said, "Teacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn't we?" But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it." They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied. Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." And they were amazed at Him.” (Mark 12:14-17) ii) Jesus’ teaching not of human origin. “Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” ~ Jesus 2. Jesus’ ______________ “’What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!’ ‘Be quiet!’ said Jesus sternly. ‘Come out of him!’ The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.” (Mark 1:24-26) The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, ‘What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey Him.’ (Mark 1:27,28) i) Jesus’ power demonstrated through His authoritative word. “Be quiet. Come out of him!” (Mark 1:25) ii) Jesus triumphs over evil. “The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.” (Mark 1:26) 3. Jesus’ ______________ “News about Him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.“ (Mark 1:28) “Great crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at His feet; and He healed them. The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing And they praise the God of Israel.” (Matthew 15:30-31) BIG Idea: “Be amazed by Jesus as you Step Out in obedience!” “You will never cease to be the most amazed person on earth at what God has done for you on the inside.” ~ Oswald Chambers Application Questions: 1.
