- Good morning, Rockpoint family. It is great to see you. Our text this morning is 2 Timothy 2:1-7. So if you've got a Bible, go ahead and grab it and head there with me. The name of our message this morning is Find Your Paul or Find Your Timothy. So I'm gonna read this and then we'll jump in together. "You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace "that is in Christ Jesus. "And what you heard from me in the presence "of many witnesses, entrust to faithful men "who will be able to teach others also. "Share in suffering is a good soldier of Christ Jesus. "No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, "since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. "An athlete is not crowned "unless he competes according to the rules. "And it is the hardworking farmer "who ought to have the first share of the crops. "Think over what I say, "for the Lord will give you understanding in everything." Let's pray. God, You literally changed my life over 20 years ago with these exact same verses. And I pray that you would change lives again right now. God, anything I say is a distraction of the truth. Let it just fade away In Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. I was a sophomore in high school. It's not a funny story, but it's a true story. I was a sophomore in high school. I was sitting at a table. I was in a Bible study with a group of friends. A man was leading the Bible study named Aaron. He was a great guy, Dallas Seminary guy. And I'm in Bible study. I remember what I was wearing. I remember what we were eating. And I remember specifically studying these verses that we get to look at this morning. And I remember, as a sophomore in high school, we read 2 Timothy 2:2 and the Bible study teacher said, hey, you guys have been in this Bible study for a while now, right? And we're all like, yeah, yeah. Now, I had only been a Christian for a couple of years, okay? We're in this Bible study and he said, hey, you guys have been in this for a while, right? Yeah. And he says, okay It's your turn. And I said, what? And we all just started sweating profusely everywhere. And we're like, what? And we're like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You're the church guy. You're the pastor. You're the preacher. You're the teacher. You're the guy to know. We just come to church and listen to you do your thing, right? And he was like, no, it's your turn. And he said, in a couple of weeks, I'm gonna teach you the book of Ephesians. Six chapters. Three chapters on God. Three chapters on what we do about it. I'm gonna teach you that in six weeks and then as soon as we're done, you're gonna teach someone else and you better get it right. And we all went, oh, okay. And here's the best part, you guys. We did it and we didn't die. And it was actually fantastic. I remember the moment as a sophomore in high school. There I am right there. Boom. Welcome to the gun show! You didn't see that coming, did you? Hey, look, I worked out a lot more back then. And not only that, but I actually had hair down to my shoulders. Okay. It was much longer. I had just gotten a haircut. That is right after a haircut. But that was also before age and gravity. Okay. So I remember doing this, you guys, as a high school guy. I took some junior high guys and I taught them what I knew. I didn't know everything. I wasn't an expert and you don't have to be. But I was faithful with what I knew. God blessed it in that moment. Literally changed the direction of my entire life and focus and passion and career and hobbies and how I neighbor and my relationships and my family. It changed everything. And Paul wrote several books in the New Testament and he says to his apprentice, Timothy, in verse one. He says, "You then my child be strengthened "by the grace that is in Christ Jesus." Now he calls him his child. And we know that Timothy was not Paul's biological child. But Paul adopted Timothy spiritually. And Paul actually said earlier in 1 Corinthians. He said this, just to distinguish. He said, "Though, you have countless guides in Christ, "you do not have many fathers. "For I became a father in Christ Jesus "to you through the gospel." See, there are many guides. There are many sermons. There are many churches. There are many books. There are many podcasts. There are many articles. There are many, many blogs. There are a lot of organizations and institutions that will guide you in the right direction spiritually. And that's wonderful. But there are not a lotta people who will adopt you spiritually as their kid and say I will relationally disciple you and help you follow Jesus like I am. Follow me as I follow Christ is what Paul said. And so the harvest is ripe and the workers are few. But there's great opportunity. Paul says in verse one, "Be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus." Now, before we tell Timothy what we're gonna do in verse two, we're gonna tell him who to be in verse one. In verse one, Paul says, "Be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus." Jesus Christ is full of grace. He gives grace. Grace is undeserved forgiveness of sin. And that is a gift from Jesus. But it also empowers and strengthens you to do what he calls you to do. That's why Paul said earlier, he said, "I've been crucified with Christ. "It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me." Jesus said, "I'm the vine. You're the branches. "If you abide in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit." And in Romans, in chapter six, Paul actually says, "This is the grace in which we stand." Grace is a gift of God. Grace is also a location. That's where you stay. You stay in the grace that is given by Jesus. And that gives you the power to live according to verse two. What Paul's gonna tell Timothy to do. What he's gonna tell him how to live his life and what he's gonna tell you and I to do right now as well. Now, verse two is the focal point of the entire book of 2 Timothy. If you understand verse two and chapter two, you get the whole book. You miss verse two, you're in trouble. Look at verse two in your own Bible, please. It says, "What you heard from me "in the presence of many witnesses, "entrust to faithful men "who will be able to teach others also." Pop quiz. How many generations are in this one verse? How many generations? Raise your hand if you think three. Three, three. Can I get a three, three, anybody? Three generations, three, three. How about four? Can I get a four, four, four. Anybody four, four, four. How about a five? Can I get a five? Five, sold! To the lady in the back. Five. There are five generations in this one verse, okay? 'Cause see Paul was an apprentice of Jesus. So you got Jesus, to Paul, to Timothy, to faithful men who'll teach others, five. There are five generations in this one verse. And that's a really important point to make because see Christianity is not about Paul. It's not about Timothy. It didn't start with them. It doesn't end with them. They are a link in the chain of what God is doing and you and I are the same way. It doesn't start with us. And it doesn't end with us. Amen. We don't hold the baton. We pass the baton on. No one lives forever. We pass on our faith. We don't need to be perfect, but we need to be blameless, above reproach. We need to be faithful with what God has told us. And we need to pass that on to other people. In verse two, when Paul tells Timothy, "What you heard from me in the presence of many witnesses." That word heard, that does not mean to just hear sermons. Paul's not telling Timothy the sermons you heard me tell, tell those sermons to other people. That's not simply what he's saying. That word heard actually means to hear, to perceive, to understand and to act upon. That's a very thorough understanding of the word heard there. Paul was telling Timothy what you heard from me about Jesus, the gospel of Jesus and the inextricable doctrines that are attached to the gospel of Jesus. The whole counsel of God, the pattern of sound teaching, he calls it later in chapter two. He says, what you heard from me. What you heard, what you internalized, and what you acted on. Entrust to faithful men who will able to teach others. Now, when you entrust something to someone, it's valuable, right? When you retire and you got your nice car. Not your daily driver. I'm talking about the nice car that stays in the garage. Okay? When you retire and you give the keys to that car and your grandkid, you're entrusting him with something valuable, right? Don't break it. Don't mess it up. Take care of this thing. It's valuable. What Paul discipled Timothy in, in the knowledge of Jesus and the way of Jesus, he's saying that's valuable. And you entrust that to people. You pass it on. What type of person do you disciple? It says it right here. You don't just disciple anybody. You disciple faithful men who will teach others. And just so you know, that word men is not limited to males only. That word men actually means humankind. It means mankind. Ladies, you're not off the hook. Okay. Paul tells Titus in chapter two, he says, "Older women likewise are "to be reverent in their behavior, "not slanderers or slaves to much wine. "They are to teach." Older women are "To teach what is good "and so train the younger women to love their husbands, "their children, to be self-controlled, "to be pure, working at home, kind, "and submissive to their own husbands, "and the word that the word of God may not be reviled." So women disciple women. Men disciple men. And we do it to the best of our ability and we do it faithfully. So question. Practically speaking. And I'm gonna err on the side of practicality this morning. 'Cause that's just kinda how I am. That's how I roll. That's how I live my life. Okay. I'm more of a practical theologian. Some I'm gonna be a little more practical this morning and I hope that's helpful for you. So how do you make a disciple? Okay, Ryan, you're saying we need to make disciples. Yeah, that's what Paul's saying. And we need to make disciples of faithful men who'll teach others, who'll teach others, who'll teach others, ad infinitum. Right, right, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, good, good. How do we do that? A great verse is Ezra 7:10. Write that down. Ezra 7:10. I've been studying the book of Ezra for the last several months. A little personal professional journey I've been on to just solidify my calling and what I do. And Ezra's a great book. And so I did a deep dive in Ezra and this verse, 7:10, jumped out at me. So how do you make disciples? You do what Ezra said. This is a great tattoo verse. Okay. If you gotta get a tattoo somewhere, I'm gonna get in trouble for that. That was a joke. Okay. I'm just joking. Just joking. Crochet this verse and put it on your wall. Okay. Whatever. All right. Ezra said it. Look what Ezra did! He did three things. It says, "Ezra set his heart to study the law of the Lord, "to do it, and to teach its ways in Israel." How do you make disciples? Study your Bible. Do what it says. And then teach it to someone else. So you read your Bible, or study your Bible. It says love your neighbor. Check. Got it. Good. Love your neighbor. Okay. I gotta do it. Now I gotta do it. Okay. You go knock on the door. Knock on the neighbor's door. Hey Frank. Hey, can I do anything to help you? Is there anything you need right now? Can I cut your grass for you when you're outta town or something? I'm just trying to be a good neighbor. He'll say, wow, thanks, Bill. That's really nice of you. Hey, no problem. Okay, great. Now you go find a younger Christian. And you say, hey, are you loving your neighbor? 'Cause I am. Hey, lemme help you figure out how to do that. Hey, let's talk about how to do that together. Study it. Do it. Teach it. Is this complicated? Is this complex? No. It's hard, but it's not complex, okay? Now lemme give you another strategy. Here's some tactics. This is a tactical strategy, okay? Four steps. By the way, you've already done this. You just don't know that you've already done this. But here's how you make a disciple. Four steps. Okay? You ever heard of the 80-20 rule? It's right here. Step number one. I do, you watch. So I'm gonna follow Jesus. I'm Paul. You're Timothy. I'm gonna follow Jesus. You're gonna watch me. Just watch me. Just, hey, come here. Just watch what I do. Watch how I live my life. Okay. I'm gonna do it. You're gonna watch me. Step one. Step two, 80-20 rule. I'm gonna do 80%. You're gonna do 20%. Okay. So, hey, I'm gonna do this, but you're gonna help me. You're gonna do a part of it. I'm gonna do this, but you're gonna help me. Okay? Step three. We're gonna flip the 80-20 rule. Now you're gonna do 80% of it. I'm gonna do 20% of it. I'm with you. I'm gonna help you. We're gonna do it together, but you're gonna do it. I'm helping and now I step back and I watch you do it. And now you go do it with someone else. Four steps, okay? I did this with my four year old the other day, actually. If you have children, have you ever heard of "Paw Patrol"? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Yes. "Paw Patrol." Super dog, superhero puppy dogs, whatever. I've invested a lotta stock. My whole retirement plan actually is in "Paw Patrol" because they come out with new stuff you gotta keep buyin'. Whatever. I'm not bitter. But I actually did this with my four year old, okay? So there's these like "Paw Patrol" picture puzzle things. There's these stickers, you know, they got stickers and numbers on them. And so I did this with my four year old. So this was the first one. I did the red one. That's Rider . Say hi, Rider. You don't have to say that. I was just talking to the children. So we say hi to everything. And so, I have toddlers. So I did this first one all by myself. Okay. And I said, hey son, come here. Let me disciple you. I'll do this on, you watch. Okay. Isn't that beautiful? Round of applause for the red one, please. Round of applause. Hey, round of applause! Thank you. Yeah. I think it's pretty good. This is all me, okay? All me. It's beautiful. It's gorgeous. It's fantastic. Perfect. Okay, this one, this green one. This is the 80-20. So this was 20% my four-year-old, 80% me. We're struggling a little bit here. We don't have it all together. We're working it out. Our head's cut off. Always a problem to have your head cut off right there. But I did 80% of this one. He helped me. My four year old helped me. Now we flipped it on him. This little orange guy, Zoom, I think his name is. We flipped it. So I said, okay, son, your turn. You can do 80%. I'm gonna do 20%. And as you can tell, we're a little broken up here. The face is a little off. The feet are a little off. We're a little. But you know, I helped him. I was with him. We got it. And then step four. This is actually the finished product. And it's really sad. This poor little puppy dog doesn't have a face. It's a little rough and it's not perfect. Is the fourth picture as good as the first one? No, but that's okay. You know why? 'Cause now he knows how to do it. I discipled him. So now daddy can go watch March Madness. Okay. So, but I mean, the point is he can do this on his own now. He can do it. Okay? If you've ever potty trained a child, you've done this. If you've ever taught a kid how to tie their shoes, you've done this. If you've ever taught a teenager how to drive, you've done this. If you've ever been in a career and had a job where you got a promotion or got another job and you had to train your replacement, you did this. You just didn't know that you did it. You know how to make disciples. You've probably done this. You can do this. And God wants to use you to do it. It's not too hard. It's not too complicated. It's hard work. You gotta be intentional, but it's not hard. It's not complicated. It's how you make disciples. Watch me follow Jesus. Help me follow Jesus. I'll help you follow Jesus. I'll watch you follow Jesus. And on infinitum. That's how you make a disciple, okay? Now verse three. Look at verses three through seven. Verses three through seven in 2 Timothy 2 are illustrating and expanding on verse two. But verse two is his focus. In verse three, Paul to Timothy. He says, "Share in the suffering "as a good soldier of Christ Jesus." Don't you wish that verse wasn't there? Yeah. Look, it's actually not that. It's not that bad. Here's the thing. I love Paul's bluntness to his apprentice, Timothy. I love that he's honest and transparent. He's not sugarcoating it or hiding it. He's saying, hey, Timothy, when you follow Jesus, you will suffer. You will suffer. But you know what? Verse three is actually an invitation from Paul to Timothy. He's saying, hey, come suffer with me as followers of Jesus. It's actually an invitation to a deeper relationship. If you've ever seen two people go through cancer together, you've ever seen that. Do they have a friendship? Oh yeah. Yeah, they do. That's a tight bond right there. You ever seen two people in the military go through basic training together or go to war together? Are they friends for a little while? Oh yeah. Yeah. That's a close bond right there. You ever been an athlete and done like two-a-days or just something really tough with a group of people? Yeah. See that mutual suffering, suffering together, actually creates a friendship and a bond. And every Christian wants close friends, don't they? But not everybody wants to suffer. But they go together. So this is not a discouraging verse. Does Jesus make your life easier? No. Jesus actually makes your life harder, but he makes your life make sense. Doesn't he? Yeah. I wish I could tell you like all the guys on TV at 2:00 AM that you know Jesus, if you're healthy and you're wealthy and you're- Doesn't work like that. Follow Jesus, it'll be hard. It's hard. There'll be suffering. Okay. But it's worth it. And it creates a bond and a friendship when you serve and suffer with other believers. Look at verse four. Verse four says, "No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits "since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him." What's a civilian pursuit. I actually called a friend of mine right now who's actually active duty military right now. Imagine the guy who's six foot four, can probably bench 300 pounds, crew cut. He's ripped. He's in shape. He's a scary dude. And he's actually active duty right now. He's actually company command. He oversees several hundred soldiers. He asked me not to name him, 'cause he doesn't want a bunch of social media attention. So I'm not gonna name him. But he's actually at Fort Irwin right now in California. There's a picture of Fort Irwin right there. And I asked him about this verse, 'cause he's a strong believer and he knows his Bible. And I said, hey, tell me about verse four, about soldiers. What does that mean? And this is what he said. Picture that guy saying this very sternly. He said quote, "When a commander gives an order, "it is to be obeyed immediately without question, "unless the commander is unclear or the intent is not understood. "Disobedience or failure to obey "will be punished and the soldier will be relieved "of their position immediately. "I only get involved in civilian affairs "if it helps me accomplish my commander's mission." Isn't that good? Yeah. That's good. Civilian pursuits. Lemme ask you a question. What are you stressed out about right now? What are you worried about? What are you worried about right now? Do you think a soldier in combat in the Middle East right now, do you think he's worried and stressed out about the same things? Probably not. 'Cause he's focused. He's on a mission. He has a purpose and he doesn't waste his time with time-wasting things. It's okay to have a hobby. Take a deep breath. Just relax. Okay. Take a deep breath. You're making me nervous. It's okay to have hobbies. It's okay to have fun. You know, you put your work in, you put your time in, 30, 40 years in a career. You wanna retire and go play some golf. Good for you. Have a hobby. Go to the cabin. That's great. But don't forget the mission. You're a soldier and you have a commanding officer and he has been crystal clear. Verse five says this. Look at verse five. It says, "An athlete is not crowned "unless he competes according to the rules." If you get bored and you want a fun YouTube rabbit hole to go down, jump on YouTube and search the greatest shots that never counted. There's all these videos of these amazing sports moments. You know, where the guy makes the perfect shot at the buzzer . You know, but he stepped on the line. Doesn't count. You can be disqualified from ministry. You can be disqualified from making disciples. If you cheat on your spouse. If you're addicted to porn. If you're an abusive person. If you lack self-awareness. If you bulldoze over people. If you don't have a grip on biblical inerrancy. If you don't understand verbal plenary inspiration. If you don't know some of the basic truths of the Bible. You don't wanna teach error, okay? That's bad. And that will disqualify you. And you don't need to be perfect, morally or ethically, but you need to be above reproach. You need to be in good shape. You need to keep short accounts with people. "An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according "to the rules." So there are rules to following Jesus. You don't have to be perfect, but you gotta stay in the boundaries of where God said to operate to really make disciples and to do it well. And you can do that. You can do that. Verse six. It says, "It is the hard-working farmer who ought "to have the first share of the crops." My father-in-law is a veterinarian. He graduated from Purdue University. So did my mother-in-law, as well. And they're both dairy farmers in Indiana. And so I called my father-in-law. He's a farmer. He's a godly man. He knows his Bible very, very well. And I asked him about verse six. I said, Pops, what do you know about verse six? And he said, well, verse six. You know, it does talk about, you know, the first year of the crops. That's rewards in heaven. He says there are rewards in heaven. That's the thing, yeah. We get rewards in heaven when we're faithful and obedient. But ultimately our rewards in heaven glorify God. So they're actually God-glorifying rewards, which is fun to think about. But also he said in verse six, he said, the point is hard work. It's what he said. So the point of verse six is hard work. It's the hard-working farmer. Following Jesus and making disciples, who make disciples, who make disciples. Guess what? It's hard work. It's hard work. It's not complicated. It's not impossible. You can do it, but it is hard work. Just like farming is hard work. Verse seven. I love verse seven. Look at verse seven. It says, "Think over what I say "for the Lord will give you understanding in everything." You know, I work with teenagers and it's wonderful. I love it. And sometimes when I talk to teenagers they're like, oh man, the Bible is so complicated. I'm like, are you kidding me? You speak like three languages. You're in like calc 17. Like I was in pre-algebra. This is not too hard. Okay. This is not too hard. Because look, look at verse seven. I'm not saying. You guys, look what Paul says. He wrote a lotta this stuff. He says, "Think over what I say, "the Lord will give you understanding in everything." This is not too complicated. You can get this. You can do it. Practically, you can make disciples. You can obey the great commandment, the Great Commission. And Paul's commandment to Timothy and Paul's commitment to all of us. You can do this. It's not too complicated. It's not above your head and you don't need a seminary degree. You need to know a couple basic truths of scripture, for sure. But just think. Just think over what he says. Spend time in the word, study, ask questions, go to Bible studies. I mean, think over what he says. "The Lord will give you understanding in everything." Now I wanna get real practical here. I'm gonna give you some practical tips, okay? Let me give you some practical tips. Tips for Timothy types and also tips for Paul types. Okay? So jot these down. These are some tips, some practical tips, for Timothys and Pauls. If you're a Timothy, let's say you're a newer Christian. You're newer to faith. You've only been a Christian for a couple of years. Or maybe you're under 40. Okay. So that's a Timothy, for example. If you're a Timothy, you're under 40 or you're newer to faith in Jesus. Okay. That's a Timothy. A Paul, let's say you're over 40. And let's say you've been a Christian for a handful of years. Okay. You're a Paul. Pauls and Timothys. I wanna give you some tips. For the Timothy types and for the Paul types. And I wanna preface this by saying this. I have been both. I am both and I will continue to be both. I have been a Paul. Okay. I have personally discipled, in the last 15 years, over 50 young men. Most of them are still walking with Jesus and I'm very proud of that and glory to God, okay? So I am making disciples. I have, and I will continue to, as a Paul type. But I've also been a Timothy type and I wanna forever be a Timothy type. This is not everybody, but this is as many as I can get onto one slide. But here's a picture of some people that have discipled me. Okay? Some people that have discipled me. These men and women have taught me how to serve God. They've taught me how to make disciples. They've taught me how to be a biblical steward, financially. They've taught me how to be a good husband. They've taught me how to pray. They've taught me how to study the Bible. They've taught me how to be wise. And they've taught me how to lead an organization. I'm very thankful for these people. I have relationships with some of these people. Some of these people are not around anymore. But I'm very thankful that God has brought godly, older, wiser people who know their Bibles to invest in me. It has helped me become who I am. And so I'm very thankful for that. And, you know, like Roy says all the time, disciple means learner. So we are always learning. We never arrive. You ever talk to a Christian, who's like, I got it all figured out. You wanna talk to them? I don't. It's annoying. Okay. You don't have it all figured out. Nobody has it all figured out. We are all a work in progress. The people on the stage, especially. So here's some tips for Timothy types and Paul types. Okay, if you're a Timothy, write these down. Timothy, here we go. Number one, ready? Timothy, you gotta know what you don't know, Timothy. You gotta know what you don't know. You gotta be self-aware. There has to be a shred of humility. If you think you got it all figured out, you're in bad shape. Step number one, you gotta know that you don't know. You know, there's an area of your life that you know you're not fully giving that to Jesus and you're not living the way you wanna live in that area. And you need help with that. So you go find an older, wiser, godlier saint and you say, will you please help me with that? You gotta know that you don't know. Can't be arrogant, Timothy. Step number one Step number two. If you're a Timothy, keep it short. Keep it short, okay? Timothys. Oh man, look. Don't come to these older, wiser, godlier people in our church. 'Cause we got a lot of them. They're great. Don't come to these people and say, hey, will you please disciple me every week for the next 26 years? They're gonna say no 'cause ain't nobody got time for that. Okay. So keep it short at first. If you're a Timothy type and you're gonna go find a Paul type and say, hey, will you disciple me? Will you spend some time with me? Help me figure out Jesus in this certain area of my life, keep it short. Keep it short. Say, hey, could we meet three times in the next six months? How about I pick up lunch? I'll come to your office at your lunch hour. I'll sit down with you. I'll pay for it. And I'll set a timer for 45 minutes and I'll be outta there so you can get to your next meeting. I don't know a mature believer on planet earth who would say no to that, okay? Now, if that grows into a longer-term discipleship relationship. Fantastic. If it doesn't, that's okay too. But start small. Make it easy for the Paul types, okay? Step number three for Timothy is take initiative. Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young. There is no age requirement in the Bible for an elder. It talks about wisdom. Take initiative. Okay? Don't sit around waiting for older, wiser people, godly people, to chase you down. Take initiative. Go get them. Say, hey, will you disciple me? And if that older, wiser, godlier person says no, move on. And go find somebody else. Keep going. Don't stop. Okay. Take initiative. Pop quiz. Who took initiative in Paul and Timothy's relationship? Who took initiative? Raise your hand if you think Timothy took initiative. Raise your hand if you think Paul took initiative. Answer is we don't know. And it doesn't matter. Because in the Bible, in the Old Testament, in the rabbinical system, the student took the initiative. In this rabbinical system, the student chased down the rabbi and said, can I please be one of your disciples? In the New Testament, Jesus says, come follow me. Jesus takes initiative. And he tells his followers you're gonna be fishers of men. Anybody ever fished? Do you catch fish sitting on the couch? No. You gotta get in the boat. You gotta get to work. You gotta take initiative. That's how you are fishers of men. So if you're a Timothy type, take initiative. Don't sit around waiting for programs and systems and just take initiative. Go find somebody and say, please help me. I wanna follow Jesus better. I need your help. Okay. Now Pauls. Lemme talk to the Pauls in here. Okay? Tip number one for a Paul. If you're Paul type. Tip number one, you have to be at Timothy first. You have to be a Timothy first. You are never too old to be discipled. You have to be a Timothy first. You as a Paul type, you don't get to disciple someone if you haven't been discipled. You can't teach what you don't know. You can't give what you haven't experienced. So you gotta be a Timothy first. Point number two for Pauls, be biblical. Okay? You gotta know your Bible. Some of the basics, not everything. But you gotta know some of the basics. And you have to do what the Great Commission says. Jesus said teaching them to obey all that I've commanded you. We're not teaching people to teach information. We live in an information age. You cannot Google search wisdom. Wisdom comes from Bible-knowing people in real life. That's where wisdom comes from. You're teaching to obey. Teaching to obey. Which is different than just teaching to inform. That's how you disciple. You teach them to obey God. According to your wiring. Your wiring, that's really important. You don't have to pretend to get up on the stage and do what these stage people do. Gimme a break. We can't all do this. Do what your wiring is good at. Man, if you live on a budget and you know how to handle money and be a good steward financially, disciple someone in that. If you know how to work on cars, say, hey, come on over, bring your car. Let's work on your car together. If you know how to do that, do that. And talk about Jesus while you do it. You're teaching people to obey but do it according to your wiring. Don't pretend like you gotta be somebody else. Be you. God made you you. God is infinite. And you reflect a part of God that nobody else does. Be yourself. Whatever you're good at, use that to make disciples. Okay. Third thing. Third tip for Paul types. Remember Joshua 1:2. Remember Joshua 1:2. You know what Joshua 1:2 is? So there's Moses and Joshua. Remember that in the Bible? In the Old Testament. Moses, great discipleship relationship right there. Moses and Joshua. Paul and Timothy, great discipleship relationship. Joshua 1:2, "Be courageous." And take a note. Didn't say that. You know what Joshua 1:2 says? Don't get mad at me. Joshua 1:2. It says, "Moses is dead." Period. "Moses is dead." It's a wonderful, inspiring verse. Okay. Put that on a big placard in the bathroom. "Moses is dead." Isn't that wonderful and encouraging, inspiring? Don't you just feel like your tank is full, leaving this morning? Yeah. Moses is dead, okay? Paul is dead, okay? Do you remember when David was fighting Goliath. You remember Saul, the leader at the time? You remember what Saul gave to David? He said here, here's my armor. Wear my stuff. Do it like I did. And David was like, this doesn't fit. Your armor doesn't fit. You guys, Timothys are gonna do things differently than you and that's okay. That's okay. Remember Joshua 1:2. You're not gonna live forever. "Moses is dead." The point is, take initiative. Don't sit around waiting for younger people to come to you and say, oh, please teach me, please disciple me. Don't do that. You go find somebody. This is your calling too. Don't expect a younger generation to act like you never act when you were younger. Take initiative. Go find a Timothy, okay? If you're a Paul type. Now I wanna finish. I wanna end with some words from the greatest. One of the greatest theologians I know. He's very biblical. His name is Indiana Jones. Okay. And of course y'all remember Indiana Jones. And you remember the best of all the Indiana Jones movies is the last movie. "The Last Crusade." "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." Remember when Indiana was going to get the Holy Grail? Remember that? It's not biblical, by the way. But he was going to get the Holy Grail and he had to do three things. Remember, Indiana Jones, he had to do three things? There were three tests. The first test was don't get your head chopped off. Second test was don't fall through a hole. And the third test was don't fall to your death and die. Okay, those are three tests, remember? And the first test was the penitent man kneels before God. Remember that? And he had to kneel before God. Remember? And the second test was the word of God. You gotta get the word of God right or else you fall through a hole. And the third was only by a leap from the lion's head will he prove his worth. You gotta take a leap of faith. You gotta kneel before God. You gotta know Jesus. You gotta be solid on the Bible. You gotta be solid on the word of God. And step three, you gotta take a risk. You gotta take a leap of faith. You know what we say here at Rockpoint? We say you gotta know, you gotta grow, and you gotta go. And when I say go, I mean, go. Go find your Paul or go find your Timothy. You can do this. And this church exists to help you do this. That's why we're here. To help you accomplish your calling. You can do it. We'll help you. Let's go and find your Paul or find your Timothy. Let's pray. Jesus, thank you for my friends this morning. I pray that you would use these words to change our lives, to change our focus. And to give us purpose and vision and a mission to stick to as we make disciples who make other disciples, the way you have discipled us. Thank you, Jesus. And we'll pray these things in your name. Amen.
